Windows Key Symbol Character

Unicode has a million icon-like glyphs, but they're not always easy to search by, since I don't always know what they look like.

Is there a Unicode glyph that looks like a 'key'? Or is there a symbol that's used in database circles to mean 'primary key', which is in Unicode?

With Character Map you choose font, character group (like Greek, or Maths symbols) and pick text characters you like. Contains information on Windows Alt codes, Linux symbol codes and standard Mac tools for special characters. Put them in documents, on Facebook, Instagram, your blog, etc. Jun 01, 2019  Depending on how you got your copy of Windows 10, you'll need either a 25-character product key or a digital license to activate it. A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 10, Version 1511) is a method of activation in Windows 10 that doesn't require you to enter a product key.

Sep 04, 2019  I have used the ALT key to insert special characters for years and suddenly they are inserting crazy characters for me. For example, ALT-150 gives me a little sun character instead of an en dash. ALT-134 gives a lower case “a” with a little circle above it instead of a daggar. ALT-167 gives degree symbol instead of section mark. To find fun or whimsical symbols, choose one of the Wingdings fonts from Character Map’s Font drop-down menu. The Wingdings font is stuffed with little doodads to spice up your documents or greeting cards. Examine the Character Map’s symbols until you spot. With Character Map you choose font, character group (like Greek, or Maths symbols) and pick text characters you like. You type them in a line by double-clicking them in character list and then copy-paste from the program's input line to where you want. It's really easy.

Full list of Alt codes. Contains both 1 - 256 and 0128 - 0256 code ranges. Numbers you can type on your keyboard's Num Pad to get special symbols. Complete table with all Alt codes and characters that they produce. To type a character using its Alt Code value, Num lock should be on. Otherwise unwanted results may occur. The numeric keypad does not exist on every laptop. To use them, Numpad should be activated by pressing down the Fn key. How to type an Alt Symbol on keyboard? For example, let's type a degree symbol by using its Alt Code value on the keyboard.

I used a little Python 3 script to look, and the closest I found does not display here for me (does display in Idle on my machine), but it is:

(Looks like a male sign pointed right with a perpendicular stroke added between the arrow and circle)

I searched for various matches like 'KEY' and 'LOCK' in the unicode names using Python's unicodedata module and no luck there.

Editing to add - Ah hah - one that looks even more like a key:

I give both of the above code points in decimal. To see them and their hex codes, go to this link:

See 26B7 in particular for the Chiron.

To find useful symbols, I have this resource:

http://shapecatcher.com

Allows you to draw a shape, which it then searches for similarly shaped unicode symbols.

I often end up using shapecatcher these days just because it's a fun break just to be able to draw the shape that you want and have the site pull it up for you. At least, sometimes it will pull it up.

Misc. Symbols Blocks

http://shapecatcher.com/unicode/block/Miscellaneous_Symbols_And_Pictographs is also a great category of unicode symbols, though as with all unicode, you may have to test compatibility.

This is duplicated from my answer here because I think the approach will be useful to others besides just me: What Unicode character do you use in your website? (instead of image icons)

Check out #26bf.

It's the parental lock, which is a key inside a square. It's a newer Unicode specification so standard fonts don't support it, but if you can find a font that has it, you're home free.

I've found Google to be the best way to find Unicode characters. I didn't find see anything useful for a key symbol, however.

If you want to search visually, use the PDF charts, since HTML-based listings will only show symbols that occur in the particular set of fonts you have installed.

Lacking any specific symbol, I would just use 'I' to indicate an index and 'PK' for a primary key.

I browsed through all the symbols (using a PHP script I created a while back) and can't see a key symbol. You could try one of these:

A mathematic-looking P:
ℙ (#8473)

Various star shapes:
★ (#9733)
☆ (#9734)
✶ (#10038)

There doesn't seem to be a unicode character that fits your description, but I'd recommend the silk icon set by famfamfam if you can use icons in your situation--just a suggestion :P

I'm trying to communicate over text the Windows keyboard shortcuts. For the ones that use the Windows key, I don't want to type 'Windows key +' each time.

Is there a unicode character for the Windows key?

For non-techies on Facebook, use workaround seen on Wikipedia: ⊞ Win.

Since you want to display the character on the Facebook where you have no control over fonts and there is no such character in Unicode at the moment, you can use mathematical operator Squared Plus (code point 229E) to imitate Windows logo as Wikipedia does in article on Windows key and in other keyboard-related articles.

Excerpt from the article:

  • ⊞ Win opens the Start Menu

  • ⊞ Win+D shows the desktop (hiding even non-minimizable windows), or restores hidden windows when pressed a second time.

  • ⊞ Win+Tab ↹ cycles through taskbar buttons. This key combination is reassigned in Windows Vista.

I am doing it that way.

Microsoft Symbols Chart

As already mentioned, there are no Unicodes for modifier keys.

You have two options: you can use the character available in the Marlett icon font, which is the font that Windows itself uses to draw its icons, and is therefore probably the most authoritative way to render the symbol, or you can use Win to symbolise the key.

Win is the most commonly-used due to its convenience, especially inside of the industry, but since you say your audience is likely to be technologically illiterate, it would be more safe to go for the former and render the actual symbol like Windows does.

If you're using MS Word, you can insert the icon directly into your document.

  1. Click the Insert tab.

  2. Click the Symbol button.

  3. Select the Marlett font by typing it in or selecting it in the dropdown.

  1. In the Character code field, type 87, then press Insert.

If you're using something other than Word, you can use Windows' native Character Map to copy the icon to the clipboard and then directly into the program you're using.

Search for the Character Map in the Start menu's search bar. Once it's open, select the Marlett font from the dropdown. In case you don't notice the Windows key instantly, search for a character code of 0x57.
